As Alvarion released its Q1 2009 figures last week, other vendors will follow suit. The motto this year is that “Flat is the New Growth!” But how did 2008 compare to 2007? In retrospective, expectations were set high for 2008. Breakthroughs in the industry were anticipated and many thought that ubiquitous wireless broadband would finally become an industry paradigm.
Maravedis is now in a position to provide insights about key equipment market statistics in its new report to be released soon: “WiMAX & Broadband Wireless Access Equipment Market Analysis, Trends & Forecasts 2009-2014,” by Bilel Bouraoui, our equipment expert.
In 2008, WiMAX CPE shipments totaled almost 2.2 million units. Almost half were 802.16-2005, while 77% of mobile WiMAX CPEs were wave 2. Proprietary CPEs shipped topped up to 880,000 units. Both fixed WiMAX and proprietary shipments showed great resilience to the financial crisis and the lack of favorable PR activity.
To a large extent, companies such as Motorola and Alvarion with portfolios of products covering proprietary and 802.16-2004 equipment had pretty solid results. Vendors who have a large installed base can leverage their existing footprint in order to smoothly secure market shares. It is a matter of fact that the overall installed base in 2007 mainly used 802.16-2004. These “established BWA/WIMAX operators” accounted for a large portion of CPE shipments. On the other hand, Alcatel-Lucent shipped more mobile WiMAX base stations than anybody else, positioning itself well around its ecosystem of device manufacturers from Taiwan, while Samsung has more CPEs interacting in its deployed infrastructure.
Next week Bilel Bouraoui will share and explain some key findings in 4G Weekly Digest. So stay tuned!
Enjoy!
