Spotlight: Sony VAIO P WiMAX Edition to be Available in Japan

Japanese buyers will soon be able to get their hands on Sony’s VAIO P WiMAX edition as of July 30th, according to an ad on the company’s customization site.

First announced back in June, the WiMAX VAIO P will be available for pre-order from July 27th, with availability expected just three days later.

Despite what the image seems to suggest, the message in this ad campaign isn't that the mini notebook is indestructable by crushing or squeezing. What is of special note here is what appears in the white circle on the right: WiMAX. Just over a month after we first learned that Sony Japan and UQ Communications were prepping a WiMAX-enabled VAOI P, the team has already completed its work and is making the integrated 4G mobile broadband modem available.

In comparison to the original sticker price of the VAIO P itself, the WiMAX edition is reasonably priced. Adding high-speed wireless Internet access will be 10,000 yen (US$106), plus additional service charges depending on usage.
Sony will only be making the WiMAX option available on corporate VAIO P models, or those customized using the “Owner Made” site and running Windows Vista. There will also be a WiMAX version of the VAIO Z-series, available at roughly the same time. VAIO “Owner Made” allows you to select the basic specifications of the hardware configuration and the color and design of your PC.
