Editor's Foreword
By Adlane Fellah, CEO and Founder

We are pleased to be back after the summer break. This fall promises to be quite eventful as the race between WiMAX and LTE intensifies and global economic shock waves continue to challenge operators and vendor profits alike, with a few notable exceptions such as Apple.

Cloud computing has been gaining momentum to become the major focus for suppliers and enterprise class and government customers. Why is this important? Because WiMAX and LTE are both flat IP extensions of computer network communication methods.  The practical use of cloud computing will very often require at least some connections to be made via MtM, (machine-to-machine), cloud-to-mobile, or otherwise wirelessly connected users and groups.  This establishes wireless network operators as necessary, often enabling part of the cloud environment.

This is significant because the IT hardware, software and services industry is larger than the traditional mobile wireless industry. Moreover, much of the innovation that now drives mobile sales and subscriber adds comes from the IT and web industry. Today, companies and governments would find it extremely difficult to operate without mobile communications, but completely impossible to operate without IT.

This brings up major issues of how mobile and independent operators will generate 4G revenues and work with or compete with IT service providers.  Companies like Google can be viewed as straddling the fence between IT and web-mobile environments, but more oriented toward the IT camp.  Google and Apple evidence the importance of the IT industry to the future of the mobile industry and where revenues are increasingly being derived.

We also invite you to meet with us at 4G World in Chicago – the first major wireless event of the fall. Maravedis will have several speaking engagements as well as a booth in the exhibit hall – more details are found in this week’s 4G Marcom Watch article below.

Enjoy!
