Brazilian auction of 3.5 GHz WiMAX bands still on hold

The Brazilian Public Auction for new licenses in the 3.5 GHz band for WiMAX has been on hold since September 2006, when the Federal Auditing Court (TCU) suspended the auction process on technical grounds.
Government delays and legal injunctions continue to stymie the process. In September 2006 the courts ordered a halt to the auction because of disputes surrounding the exchange rate used to calculate prices. The court was to vote on a new date for the auction; however, this was deferred due to legal disputes from fixed-line operators excluded from the auction. more…

The recent announcement by Sprint and Clearwire of their joint collaboration to build out their combined spectrum assets with a WiMAX network seems to have not caught on with very much buzz it seems. I am more optimistic than some about this. Certainly, there have been criticisms of Sprint of late, which has taken hits for the loss of customers and other setbacks in its bid to digest the Nextel merger.. more…

The Status of WiBro in Korea

WiBro is a hot topic in Korea these days. In less than three months after the commercial launch of WiBro in April, Korea Telecom has accumulated 20,000 WiBro subscribers, raking in 6.3 billion won of revenues in Q2 2007. In July, KT disclosed that 300–400 new subscribers were being added each day and was expecting 10,000 more subscribers in July than in June. KT attributes the recent growth to several factors: the resolution of certain coverage problems, the increased service use by teenagers during summer vacation, the introduction of a WiBro USB modem for laptop users, and the strengthening of its online and offline sales networks. more…
