WiMAX Commercial Deployments to Increase 70-80% in 2008
Adlane Fellah, CEO and founder

WiMAXCounts is now in a strong position to monitor the early ramp in deployments and subscriber growth on an ongoing basis. WiMAXCounts Quarterly Report released on November 6 brings forward key findings that rise critical interest in the industry. As an example this quarter report confirm that we can expect that with the introduction of major network deployments for mobile WiMAX in 2008, combined with lower CPE pricing, to accelerate subscriber growth in 2008 and contribute to a 70-80% yearly increase in commercial deployment,. more…

Middle East and Africa: Gaining WiMAX Momentum
By Cintia Garza, Market Analyst

For years, the Middle East and Africa (MEA) has been the least connected region of the world. However, the lack of wired telecom infrastructure such as cable or DSL opens up big opportunities for wireless access technologies such as WiMAX to provide broadband Internet to the many rural and underserved areas in the region. There are over 1 billion inhabitants in the region, representing around 15% of the global population. However, the region has fewer than 60 million Internet users, 70% of whom are in the following 6 countries: Saudi Arabia, Israel, South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco. These countries account for 5.3% of the world’s 1.1 billion Internet users, according to “ITU – Telecommunication/ITC Markets and Trends in Africa 2007.” more…

The Impact of Mobile Multi-Hop Relay on WiMAX: Above and Beyond
Robert Syputa, Senior Analyst

This article is in response to a recent question I received regarding 802.16j Mobile Multi-hop Relay (MMR) and 802.16m IMT-Advanced standards and commercial developments. I have discussed over the past few years the development of a “middle tier” of wireless network requirements. More recently I have renamed this SDWBBN, for “smart distributed WBB network.” The recent draft for IMT-Advanced is expected to serve from low-cost, low-bandwidth applications to high-bandwidth and high-value specialized applications over the next couple of years. This area has been rapidly developing within standards efforts and individual companies, as reflected by patent applications and submissions to standards groups. But there is much more to MMR than just extending network coverage similar to Wi-Fi MESH or 3G’s use of femto cells. more…

Mobile WiMAX: The Global Congress
Nov 28-30, 2007

Robert Syputa will share his thoughts about the rapidly evolving landscape that sees WiMAX becoming a part of a converged wireless industry. Opportunities are rapidly developing but that increases the potential for conflicts over spectrum and IPR to come to the forefront. The rollout of the mobile version of WiMAX and rapid development of 802.16m which will contend for a leadership role in IMT-Advanced will also be discussed. more…
