BWA/WiMAX Worldwide Subscriber Base Reaches 1,728,000 in Q4 2007
By Adlane Fellah, CEO |
Maravedis is now tracking 250 BWA and WiMAX operators worldwide on a weekly base. We released our latest industry statistics last week noticed that the global BWA/WiMAX subscriber base increased by 350,000 in the fourth quarter of 2007, reaching a total of 1,728,000 subscribers..
This figure covers 95% of current deployments and on-going trials worldwide. The networks are growing organically, that is, slowly covering underserved areas and building market presence in their territories. New operators such as Wateen in Pakistan have finally launched service and are experiencing rapid growth, while other “established” Greenfield operators such as Unwired Australia are struggling to add more subscribers in a rapidly changing telecom environment. more…

The Role of WiMAX in the Municipal Network
By Jeff Orr, Senior Analyst - Consumer Electronics |
Municipal wireless has received a bad name after aborted attempts to launch city-wide Wi-Fi services, primarily in the US. Not since enterprise IT managers learned of vulnerabilities in early Wi-Fi security protocols did such a stigma hover over the wireless industry. Edge services such as Wi-Fi are being deployed where existing network infrastructure is already in place rather than building entirely new networks. The emergence of WiMAX products could trigger resurgence in microwave systems to enhance the communications capabilities and operating efficiencies of local government. more…

The DNA of the Next Digital Revolution?
Intel Atom: The Most Dramatic Adventure Since the Coining of the i8080
Series
By Robert Syputa, Senior Analyst |
On March 2nd, 2008, Intel officially took the wraps off one of the best prepared for shifts in company fortunes ever engaged by the largest IC company – Atom and five other new entries along the evolutionary road map for processors. In their core digital world, Intel has been the most instrumental for creation of new IT and networking industries. And the company has played an early role in solid state memories and enabling semiconductor processors that have been leveraged in diverse areas of electronics including chip sets, graphics, and evolved memory and bus architectures.
The question for well over a decade has been, “Where does Intel go from here?” Obviously Intel has championed WiMAX but that only raises more questions about how WiMAX and wireless in general fits into the picture to contribute in a significant way to Intel’s sales and profits. more…
