Latest WiMAXCounts Quarterly Report: WiMAX Deployments Hit By Economic Downturn
By: The Maravedis Team

The third quarter of 2008 proved very eventful for the WiMAX industry. September marked another milestone with the commercial launch of Sprint’s XOHM in Baltimore, which will be a key driver for greater WiMAX market penetration. As of January 2009, Sprint had not yet released details of the results of that launch in terms of subscribers. Also during this quarter, the WiMAX Forum certified another 13 mobile WiMAX products (in the 2.5GHz band) in addition to the first 10 mobile WiMAX products certified in June 2008. In total, 10 vendors now have certified WiMAX equipment. We also saw major operator developments in countries such as Russia and India – the latter considered one of the most promising countries for WiMAX’s future, due to its need for greater broadband connectivity more…

Thriving vs Struggling

Thriving:
Wavesat - Broadband Wireless semiconductor company announced yesterday that it has secured its latest round of funding, raising $11.7 million CAD. Existing investors led by BDR Capital, BDC Capital and Multiple Capital participated in the round. Proceeds will be used to further strengthen the Wavesat’s leadership position in the 4G Broadband market. Wavesat's solutions enable customers todeploy multiple Broadband Wireless technologies such as WiMAX Wave2 and XG-PHS today and to migrate seamlessly to future 4G technologies such as LTE. Wavesat’s Odyssey 4G multi-protocol architecture has been gaining wide-spread acceptance since it was introduced in May 2008. In recent months, the company announced that Compal, a leading ODM for handheld devices, selected the Odyssey for mobile WiMAX USB dongles. Japanese wireless operator Willcom has chosen Wavesat to help develop XG-PHS services and equipment.

down arrow.png Struggling:
Alvarion – Last week Nortel Networks Ltd. repudiated the joint strategic WiMAX agreement it entered into with Alvarion in June 2008. The agreement covers Nortel’s resale of Alvarion’s WiMAX access products and its contribution of resources and funding to accelerate Alvarion’s development of its portfolio of WiMAX base stations. According to the terms, Nortel must pay Alvarion for research and development services beyond Q4; however, collection of these payments is uncertain and subject to Nortel’s creditor protection proceedings. Alvarion will not be able to recognize approximately $2.4 million of revenues from the sale of products to Nortel during the fourth quarter of 2008. Accordingly, total revenues for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2008, are expected to be approximately $70 million, at the low end of the Company’s revenue guidance of $70 to $78 million. Alvarion now expects a Q4 GAAP net loss of approximately $4.9 million, (or $0.08) per share), including a restructuring charge of approximately $3.4 million, related to the cost reduction initiatives announced in December 2008. Alvarion’s priority is now to minimize the effect of Nortel’s decision on their joint customers.
