Issues Surrounding the 2.6GHz UK Auction
Cintia Garza, Market Analyst |
In the next few months, UK telecom regulator Ofcom is planning to auction a huge portion of spectrum suitable for high speed mobile broadband, including 190MHz in the 2.6GHz band and 15MHz in the 2010MHz band. According to Peter Phillips, Partner Strategy at Ofcom, about 40% of UK households still do not have broadband. Three quarters of those don’t have any Internet access at home. Spectrum in the 2.6GHz and 2010MHz bands in the UK will play an important role in the development of advanced mobile data; operators looking to adopt technologies such as LTE and WiMAX have shown great interest in this auction. The 2.6GHz band is the only spectrum likely to be made available in the near term, which will provide sufficient spectrum to cater to the larger bandwidths likely to be supported by LTE and WiMAX in 10MHz and 20MHz blocks...

Thriving/Struggling

Thriving:
Broadcom – Last week semiconductor manufacturer Broadcom announced the first Android mobile platform to support wireless connectivity “combo chips.” Broadcom was the first chipmaker to successfully combine Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM technologies on a single silicon die, and now offers the industry's largest portfolio of wireless combo chips. Access to its BCM4325 drivers enables the Android ecosystem to support advanced wireless connectivity solutions. The software that controls its Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM combination solution is a standard component of the latest Android operating system. This is the first time that the Android platform includes native support for a multi-functional combo chip. Open access to portions of Broadcom's combo drivers provides Android developers with a head start in designing mobile devices and applications. The Broadcom BCM4325 is the best-selling bluetooth and Wi-Fi combo chip on the market, simplifying the integration of wireless connectivity technologies and accelerating platform development cycles. Combo chips are expected to account for nearly 60% of connectivity solutions that ship into mobile phones by 2012

Struggling:
Cisco Systems – Cisco posted a 27% drop in quarterly profit, warning that businesses are increasingly scaling back their technology spending. Revenue fell 7.5% in Cisco’s fiscal second quarter, which ended Jan. 24. The company also signaled that conditions had worsened, predicting revenue in the current period could drop 15% to 20% from a year earlier. Overall, Cisco's orders for the second quarter shrank 14%, but in January orders were down 20% from a year ago. Cisco's corporate customers have steadily cut the amount they have spent on technology over the last year, though some of those losses have been offset by phone and cable companies, which have bought Cisco gear in order to keep pace with increasing Internet traffic. In the January quarter these U.S. companies placed 30% fewer orders than the year-ago quarter. Cisco is aiming to cut spending by $1 billion this fiscal year by implementing a hiring freeze, reducing travel and similar measures including some likely job cuts. Cisco reported net income in the second quarter of $1.5 billion, or 26 cents a share, down from $2.06 billion, or 33 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue declined to $9.09 billion from $9.83 billion. |
