Editor’s Foreword
By Adlane Fellah, CEO |
As Maravedis rightly predicted, vendor Telsima was sold off to Harris Stratex for a fraction of its value at US$12 million. Telsima raised close to US$70 million in venture capital (and US$25 million in debt). Obvious losers in the deal include past investors NewPath Ventures, CMEA Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Intel Capital and JAFCO Asia. read more…

Is Bandwidth the Deal Maker or Breaker?
Sizing up the Competitive Opportunities for Verizon (LTE) and Clearwire (WiMAX)
By: Robert Syputa, Senior Analyst & Partner |
Amidst the discussions about the roll out of WiMAX and LTE by Clearwire and Verizon is the question of what is more central to capturing markets: bandwidth or coverage? Putting differences in technologies aside, the chief difference between Verizon and Clearwire’s networks will be bandwidth capacity, ease, and extent of wide area coverage. When modeled, the financing of network deployments could achieve rapid ROI if demand for bandwidth materializes. But given the degree of economic uncertainty, the margin for error has narrowed. One of the greatest determinants of Clearwire’s success is the rising demand for bandwidth caused by IPTV, which now consumes over 60% of Internet traffic and poses spectrum bandwidth as the bottleneck for delivering service.
As Verizon rushes to deploy its LTE network into a planned 25-30 markets by the end of 2010, we can’t help but see this as an effort to stave off the attempt by Clearwire to fill up its vast bandwidth pipe at a pace that will become regenerative without the need for huge new cash infusions. view full article…

ARPU Growth Not Keeping Up With Traffic Growth
By Basharat H. Ashai, Market Analyst - Asia Pac & Middle East |
Last week I attended the “Mobile Backhaul Conference 2009” in Hong Kong, organized by BEACON Events. I served as chair on day one of the conference and moderated three panel discussions. Although all these panels were very informative, I will here focus on some of the major overarching issues that came up during the conference: the rise in traffic growth outpacing ARPU growth, and the need for higher capacity backhaul solutions.

Ups/Downs
  |
Ups:
- Chip giant Qualcomm has acquired streaming video start-up Digital Fountain to boost its position in mobile television. Its interests will lie in the smaller firm's DF Raptor technology, which optimized digital content for a variety of different networks; in patents (the platform has been adopted by several standards efforts including the 3GPP, DVB and IETF); and in gaining new engineering talent. view story

 |
Downs:
- Long-time industry news source RCRWireless has fallen victim to the global financial meltdown, forced to close its doors last week and ceasing both its print publications and online Web updates. view story
