October 2005: Press Release |
700MHz to become the next battleground in the clash between Qualcomm and Intel
Montreal, Canada, October 4, 2005: Maravedis Inc., a world-leader in market research and analysis specializing in Broadband Wireless Research and Analysis is pleased to announce the availability of its USA and Canada 700 MHz Regulatory and Market Analysis, aimed at industry stakeholders investigating the 700 MHz band for commercial use.
The report provides an in-depth review of the 700 MHz band, which includes the spectrum occupied by UHF TV channels 52 through 69 (698 MHz – 806 MHz). Although development of Public Safety use in the 700 MHz band began in 1997, few systems have actually been deployed due to concerns with interference from the incumbent broadcasters. But 700MHz may well become the next battleground in the clash between Qualcomm and Intel.
“What makes 700 MHz spectrum exceptionally attractive for wireless broadband operators is the cost dynamics of system deployments”. said Adlane Fellah, senior analysts, Maravedis. “The lower the frequency of operation, the farther signals propagate and penetrate through trees and buildings and bend around obstacles”.
The 700 MHz spectrum is increasingly being developed for use of OFDM based technologies. Many traditional CDMA companies have shifted to OFDM as the core technology, and may other companies are pursuing development of systems based on OFDM/WIMAX. Migration of TV broadcasters away form the spectrum and licensing of the vacated spectrum could become the decisive factor in how quickly and extensively development unfolds.
This report discusses the Regulatory history in both the United States and Canada and provides details on the 700 MHz technical parameters, possible usage scenarios and details of the FCC auction outcome and winners.
